Verna enjoys spending her time at school because she is committed to studying hard and continuing on to college. Her mother has worked hard to instill a good work ethic in her and to emphasize the importance of education. Verna struggles at school when she begins working with Jolly because she does not have as much time to study.

City

The neighborhood that Verna lives in with her mother is slightly dangerous, but her mother works with other residents of their apartment building to try and keep their block safe. Jolly lives in a much more dilapidated section of the city.
