Maizy Chen

Maizy Chen is the protagonist of the novel, and it is written from her perspective. She is a dynamic character who changes throughout the course of the novel. When she first arrives in Last Chance, she does not want to be there. She is rude to Logan. She does not know her family history and has not known her grandparents very much at all.

She becomes invested in stories about an ancestor of hers, Lucky, and through Opa’s telling of these Lucky stories, she develops a closer relationship with Opa, and she becomes more invested in her family history. She learns more about Chinese American culture, and she becomes so invested in learning about the paper sons that she contacts a woman who can help her learn more about them.

She leaves Last Chance with her mother at the end of the story, but she leaves...
