Summary

In Chapter 5, after Charlie gets his cast, he and Miranda have sex. Charlie is pleased with their renewed closeness. Charlie tries not to press her about Gorringe. Instead he independently investigates the details of the case. He discovers that in college Miranda went to Gorringe's house with a bottle of vodka, and later accused him of raping her. Gorringe told the court they kept drinking after having sex, that Miranda even texted her friend to brag about the affair. Miranda denied the existence of the friend and the messages. The court did not attempt searching the phone records.

At home, Adam sees the cast and apologizes. Charlie feels disturbed by presence, the blank look in his eyes. He realizes he is indeed a machine. In an attempt to reassert his authority, Charlie tells Adam he bought him with inheritance money, as evidence of...
