“Ma Rainey”, both the text and the character, represents the culture surrounding blues music and what that music means to its people. Blues, by nature, is about the misfortunes and anxieties of the working class, particularly working class Black Americans. However, there is also a sense of courage and hope that comes from performing, consuming, and appreciating this music. It brings people together in solidarity and creates a space that those in power cannot take away.
