Summary

The next chapter is titled “Mildred, October 1955,” and Mildred talks about the evenign at the movies with Richard. Mildred does not want to go to the movies but gives in when Garnet insists. Mildred is pressed against Richard. Garnet is seated in her friend Floyd's lap. There are five boys in the back seat. Richard confides in Mildred that he invited everyone to the movies so she would go. She counters, saying she might have refused if he had invited only her. She has known Richard for years from the neighborhood but is now beginning to get to know him on a personal level.

They go to the drive-in and two of the boys hide in the trunk so they will not have to pay to enter. The boys all pile out of the car, leaving...
