Bethesda, Virginia

Bethesda is the city in Virginia where Bee is living at the start of the novel. She lives in an apartment by herself. She works in a "minuscule, windowless office on the Bethesda campus of the National Institutes of Health" (3). Although Bee loves her work and loves science, she feels stunted in Bethesda. The end of her relationship with Tim and her friendship with Annie have particularly unmoored her. Indeed, living and working in Bethesda was never the future she imagined for herself. Therefore, when she learns about her new job with BLINK, she is grateful for the opportunity to leave Virginia. Though the job is only a three-month position, because of BLINK's success and her relationship with Levi, Bee never returns to Bethesda.
