Summary

The speaker announces that Love welcomes him into their abode. The speaker, however, is reticent to accept Love's hospitality, and instinctively draws backwards. When Love sees the speaker's reaction, they come closer to the speaker and ask in a gentle manner whether there is anything that the speaker lacks.

The speaker, still fraught with questions over whether they are deserving of Love's kindness, responds that the thing he lacks is "A guest...worthy to be here" (7). When Love hears this, they assure the speaker that he himself is worthy. The speaker, however, still convinced of his unworthiness, tells Love that he is so ashamed of himself he cannot even look Love in the eye. Love responds by taking the speaker by the hand and reminding the speaker that his own eyes were made by Love in the first place.

Again, the speaker entreats Love...
