Summary

In Chapter 33, Eliza receives a letter from Merrill, who is training with the air force before departing for France. Billy Maddox, a police officer, notifies Eliza and Caroline that Electra has filed a complaint, due to overextended occupancy of their Southampton residence. Electra and her friends threatened to have Maddox “‘canned,’” and told him that “‘the town’s overrun with folks talking foreign languages and they just don’t like it’” (257). The women are also working to have Caroline removed from the hospital board. Maddox warns Eliza and Caroline to arrange other accommodations for the émigrés, as he will begin making arrests tomorrow. Eliza prepares for a charity event happening on the following day. Eliza and Nancy talk about the deaths of Henry and Nancy’s two children, Dresnik and Sasha.
