chapter 1-4 Summary

The story starts out with Thomas Covenant walking down the street. People are moving out of his path as he heads to the light and phone company. Thomas Covenant has leprosy and the entire town is scared that they will catch it. He normally doesn't come into town but is making his way to pay the phone bill and going to the light company to straighten out his account. When he mailed his bill to the light company they sent him a letter back telling him that someone took care of his account for an entire year. Thomas is worried that the community is trying to push him out of their society by taking away his reasons for coming to town.
