Chapters 5 and 6 Summary

In Chapter Five, "Rough Work," Joe uses the employee entrance to the sumptuous Hotel Statler, where a huge party is being held, attended by an assortment of politicians, gangsters, celebrities and media. He keeps his hat on, hoping to avoid detection. He sees Albert White, and then spots Emma at a mezzanine balcony. He signals to her, and begins making his way across the crowded room toward the stairs. After almost bumping into a newspaper reporter, Joe makes the mistake of looking into the man's face. When he reaches Emma, he tells her that he has been recognized, and they head for a service elevator.
