Summary

In Sunrise, the narrator tells the reader that he will not omit himself from the story in the manner that Homer omitted Helen of Troy from The Odyssey. While Less was travelling through the South, “being asked what it was like to be gay, [Freddy] was attending a faculty party at the local Down East college” (207). At the gathering Freddy introduces himself to Jason Difelino who declines to shake his hand. He explains that he is in “a contest with [his] grad students” to see how long they can go without any “human contact, physical contact” (209). He and his student Hari are the only two left in the competition. When Freddy realizes that Hari is the student he saw making out with someone in the coat room, he congratulates Jason on his win and asks if he would like to break his touch sobriety...
