Summary

Part III takes place in November of 1954. Chapter 19 begins with Lily getting out of bed on Friday night, intending to sneak out so she could meet Kath and go to the Telegraph Club. As she got ready, she thought about how Shirley would advise her to dress and do her hair. She put on red lipstick that Shirley had helped her pick out at a drugstore. Having reached the spot where she had agreed to meet Kath and seeing no one there, she began to worry, but Kath soon appeared. Lily felt hesitant about going to the club, but when Kath asked her if she wanted to go home, she shook her head.
