Summary

Pete continues to give Lanny art lessons, and they continue to enjoy each other’s company. The narrative then shifts to Toothwort, who thinks about his place in English folklore. He thinks of the different ways that people depict him. His actual form changes as England itself changes. The story then shifts to Jolie, who finds Lanny home early from an art lesson. Lanny, distraught, explains that he accidentally broke Pete’s stereoscope and snuck out without telling him. Jolie brings Lanny back to Pete’s house, and Lanny tells Pete what happened. Pete is not angry at all says and that the stereoscope was in no way valuable. Pete and Lanny then proceed with the day’s art lesson. The story then shifts to Toothwort, who thinks about the history of past centuries in England, which he witnessed firsthand. He also sifts through...
