Summary

In Part III, "August 1966," Maddie tells Bauer she thinks Cleo was seeing Taylor and that he stole the clothes from his customers to give her. Bauer scoffs, saying all politicians have mistresses. Defeated, Maddie feels men care nothing for love. She recalls her adolescent relationship with Allan. After he got her pregnant, she had an abortion, which she later believed was keeping her from conceiving with Milton. Despairing, she visited Allan again on an impulse, and they made love. Afterwards, Maddie had sex with Milton, becoming pregnant shortly thereafter. Until now, she never considered Milton might not be Seth's father, realizing how close she was to ruining her life.

In "August 1966," Maddie returns to the Sherwoods. Mrs. Sherwood admits how strange her last visit with Cleo was, but does not know why someone would have killed her.
