Patio Chair

Ryle’s act of taking his anger out on the patio chair represents his abusive nature.

Blurry Picture

The blurry picture is a symbol of mixed messages. Lily is angry when she realizes the blurry photograph hanging on the wall in Allysa’s apartment is of her. She later confronts Ryle and tells him that she is angry for sending her mixed messages. He tells her that he does not want a relationship with her. Yet, he has distorted pictures of her hanging on his walls and sends her flowers.

Journal

Lily’s journal represent her past experiences. Lily writes the entries as if she is writing letters to Ellen DeGeneres. She tells Ellen how her father abuses her mother and how she fears her mother will never leave him. Lily also describes her relationship with Atlas and how she came to love him.
