Summary

In Chapter 11, “A God for the Accused” (138), Brown explains that later in life, her cousin Dalin began selling drugs and was arrested several times and assaulted by police officers. While Dalin was serving a 10-year prison sentence, Brown decided to write him a letter. He responded, and she sent another letter back to him. She does not know if he ever received it because he died in prison a short time later, struck by lightning while outside during a storm. A week later, Brown was in church. The pastor invited anyone who would like to recommit themselves to Jesus to come forward. A man about Dalin's age came down the aisle and said he had just been released from prison. Brown felt angry that Dalin would never have a second chance at life. She tells this story because she believes it is important...
