The majority of the novel takes place at Dellecher Classical Conservatory in the fictional town of Broadwater, Illinois. Oliver and his friends study drama there. Dellecher is known for cultivating famous actors and artists. The dean, Dean Holinshend, encourages his students to take risks, even if that means making enemies. The campus is surrounded by a lake and forest.

Oliver and his friends live together in a dormitory nicknamed the Castle. It is a bit far from the main campus, granting them privacy. They spend most of their time in the Castle library. Oliver and James share a room in the Tower.
