Point of View

The novel is narrated in third-person present by a narrator who has a close focalization on Chloe Green, the main character. In between chapters, epistolary documents “From the Burn Pile” are presented. These are ultimately revealed to be papers that the students of Willowgrove Christian Academy burn at their senior bonfire during the summer after graduation. Nothing of plot importance ever takes place in these documents, but they do open up the perspective a bit by giving insight into side characters, like Ace, who is shown to be funny and kind in his note to Shara on that he scribbled on the back of a Bible worksheet titled “Armoring Yourself with the Lord.”
