Summary

In "Through the Garden of Memory," while babysitting children at a memorial service, Jun contracted the plague. His parents admitted him to the hospital. None of the treatments for children were "working for adults" (63). While lying in the hospital bed, Jun began screaming, but could barely hear himself. His parents were "screaming for help" (64). June closed his eyes and awoke "in darkness" (64).

In the darkness, Jun wanders around. He is no longer in his hospital attire. He meets a lawyer, a felon, a student, and an old woman. They tell Jun their stories. No one is sure where they are or how long they will be there. Though everyone is confessing things about themselves, Jun stays quiet and hesitant. He starts remembering things from his past and feeling guilty.
