Summary

In “Six Years Earlier,” Libby is ten-years-old. Moses Hunt calls her “flabby” (57) and will not allow her to use any of the playground equipment because he says she might break it. She wonders what she has done to make Moses hate her so much. She senses he will never like her regardless of her weight. She hears Bailey playing with the others and wonders briefly why Bailey is not looking for her. At the same time, she thinks that if she were like Bailey, she would want to avoid her, too.

In “Now,” Libby learns the other heavy girl is named Iris Engelbrecht. She has been heavy since birth because she has hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome. Iris refuses to tell the principal what happened because she believes it will only make things worse.
