Summary

Chapter 30 starts with Priti calling out to Nishat her pet name across the hallway. When Priti sees Nishat’s trashed stall, she tells her to tell Ms. Montgomery but Nishat says no, thinking of all the other homophobic experiences she has endured lately. Nishat then sees her parents walk up, wearing their best traditional Bengali outfits. When her mother sees her trashed stall, she sits down asking if Nishat is going to do her mehndi. Nishat grabs a henna tube and starts designing on her mother’s hands. Ammu asks if things like this happen often, meaning her stall but also attacks on her generally. Nishat says sometimes, blinking away tears. Ammu says Nanu would be proud of her, and her henna is beautiful.


There is a henna line break as they all drive home, praising Nishat for her originality and talent. Soon...
