Flight

Flight symbolizes freedom in the novel. This manifests primarily in Marian's plot, but in Hadley's as well at the end of the novel. Marian yearns to fly. When she is in the sky, Marian has her most fulfilling experiences and seems to feel at peace with herself. When she is on the ground with other people, though, Marian feels imprisoned. This is epitomized by Barclay, who forces her to remain at Bannockburn. In the sky, when Marian is alone, she is not bound by anything except her will to fly higher and farther. Hadley expressly states that she feels free during her second flight lesson, albeit only for a moment. This suggests that, like Marian, Hadley feels imprisoned when she in her standard environment, surrounded by people in the entertainment industry.
