Summary

“Just Right” takes place in New York City in 1959. It begins with a boy named Donovan Kendal answering his teacher's questions about the puppet show he performs with his parents in Greenwich Village. She suggested he incorporate the puppet show into a school project, but he responded, stuttering, that he was already preparing a project on the newly opened Guggenheim Museum. The teacher suggested the children work in pairs, and Donovan was partnered with an African American girl named Cassie Kent. After school, Cassie showed Donovan how to play chess in the park.
