The Rapid City

The Rapid City is the Clubmobile truck that Dorothy and Irene operate throughout the war. At the outset of their assignment, Dorothy insists that she will drive when Russell Penny gets behind the wheel. She feels like she is playing a more active role if she is driving the vehicle instead of riding in the back. Throughout the novel Dorothy and Irene travel across France in the Rapid City making coffee and donuts for the troops. Toward the close of the book, when they are clandestinely heading to Füssen, Irene hits a crater in the road and the truck crashes over the cliff edge. She and Dorothy are both thrown from the vehicle before it bursts into flame. However, both women believe that their friend died in the crash.
