Summary

In Chapter 11, Augustine and Iris get comfortable in their new home. The outpost at Lake Hazen features plenty of food supplies, and they go skating on the frozen lake. Augie approaches the weather station building, but feels a strange sense of apprehension and does not enter. He wonders if he loves Iris, and recalls his lifelong inability to sustain intimate relationships with women, how he would make women fall in love with him and then quickly abandon them. He recalls having strong feelings for a woman named Jean while working at a research facility in Socorro, New Mexico.

In Chapter 12, Sully and Devi commence the spacewalk to install the new communications satellite. All is going according to plan when suddenly Devi becomes unresponsive. Thebes comes on the radio in Sully's ear and says that there is a carbon dioxide leak in Devi's spacesuit...
