This poem was inspired by Charles Simic's "Tattooed City", which specifically references divine beings huddling beneath an urban underpass (the passage area beneath a bridge where cars travel overhead). In a large city, this is sometimes where unhoused people congregate for shelter. The construction of this place positions it as not only a transient place, but also a threshold: a border traditionally associated with otherworldly travel.
