Summary

Part II takes place in December 1984 and is told from the perspective of Bicho Souza and Lucio Montes. The narration begins in the present tense but then shifts to the past tense when Souza and Montes recall past events. The tense of this summary will reflect the tense of the narration at each moment in this section of the novel. Souza leaves a movie theater after watching a screening of Last Train from Gun Hill starring Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn. He notices that during the time he was inside there had been a torrential downpour of rain, but he had missed it entirely. Souza goes into a nearby café and observes the people around him, including the waiter who bears a resemblance to Anthony Quinn’s son in the movie, who turns out to be the murderer.
