Summary

In Chapter 13, Kim is accepted to Yale. Paula, who still receives her mail, is surprised by the admission. Paula says that she will not allow Kim to attend Yale, since they did not ask her permission before applying. Ma tells Paula that Kim will go to college wherever she likes, a response that Paula thinks indicates her lack of gratitude. Kim tells Paula that all she has ever shown them is “Fake kindness, fake etiquette” (265). Kim continues to berate Paula for the apartment she gave them and all the difficulties she made them endure. Ma tells her sister that since they finally repaid their debt and that they were now free of Paula.
