Snow begins to fall in early October but is quickly driven away by an Indian summer. Then at the end of October the cold settles in and people are chilled to the bone soon after setting foot outside. Snow falls steadily for several days and the sky is gray. Per Hansa and the boys work throughout the days trying to finish all necessary tasks before winter sets in. Per Hansa whitewashed the walls immediately after returning from the Hallings' and now white encompasses them inside and out.
