Summary

In Chapter 9, while in town, Guálinto ran into Chucho Vázquez. Chucho was rumored “to keep a list of all the boys and men he had cut up” (239). When Chucho invited Guálinto to throw dice with him, Guálinto declined. Chuco got angry and made derogatory comments about Maruca. A fight ensued. Guálinto ran home to get his knife. He raced through the streets, determined to get revenge. Finally he found Chuco “at the mouth of the alley” (243). A knife fight ensued. Guálinto ran off once Chuco fell.

In Chapter 10, Guálinto waited to hear about Chuco's fate. Although anxious, Guálinto “was pretty sure Chuco was alive” (248). He soon learned that Chuco “had been wounded” (248). When everyone talked about it at work, Guálinto was nervous they suspected him.
