Summary

Part II begins and Cedar has been taken by the Unborn Protection Society (UPS) to Fairview Riverside Hospital. Phil was not home when the UPS came. Cedar decides this is a good thing because her roommate, a woman named Agnes Starr, says that her boyfriend was shot and killed when she was detained. Agnes tells Cedar not to take the “vitamins” (127) the staff is giving her – they are being drugged. She also says that she plans to break out of the hospital with the help of a friend. The nurses come for Agnes that night and she fights for her life, to no avail. When Cedar asks later where Agnes is, she is told she went home.

Cedar's second roommate is a young Asian woman who does not speak. Cedar tries to ask another nurse, Jessie, what happened to Agnes. She...
