Chapter 5: Spitting Image

Max is under his bed where he can be off on his own cloud somewhere. His grandmother is knocking on the door. Gwen Avery has called her. She wants to apologize for being so rude to Max. She did not realize who he was. She is delighted that the Freak and Max are "making friends." Max's grandmother explains that Gwen and his mother were friends and were pregnant at the same time. Gwen has invited Max for dinner but he is not sure he wants to go. His grandmother encourages him and Max agrees to go.

Gwen is apologetic about her behavior as she busies herself about the kitchen making dinner. Freak is on the floor trying to find pots and pans in the still unpacked boxes. Gwen is talking so fast in trying to make amends to...
