Summary

Chapter Five is titled “Under The Ground,” and is narrated in the first-person voice of Nanapush. He describes Fleur’s decision to kill Mauser and go back home, and how one night, she made her way to his room with a knife and prepared to stab him. In the moments before she strikes, however, he speaks to her and causes her to pause. This is because, he speaks in her own language, which surprises her as much as his admission that he believes she is one of the women he has wronged. She describes to him her feeling that when she walks through the halls of his house, she is walking through the trees that he took from her land.
