Summary

Chapter 26 begins with the president giving a speech at Tiananmen Square. He was booed vehemently by the crowd. Mei had mixed feelings of guilt when she witnessed this and saw the president’s dejected state. Mei was also worried that she was pregnant. Mei was then called upon to give a speech to the crowd as Dong Feng. Mei saw Midnight Chang sit next to the Chairman as she walked up to the podium; this made her jealous and angry. Mei began her speech, but immediately then started to warn the crowd of the Chairman’s deception; she was instantly cut off by the premier. The crowd did not hear her and cheered loudly as this happened. Mei fled into the crowd and was caught amongst the mob; the Red Guard were beating people violently.
