Summary

Father walks in on Ada and Lorraine, and he quickly realizes what has happened. He asks Ada how long Samson has been in the Ground. Ada says it has been two weeks. Father says he has no way of fixing Lorraine, and that if the villagers ever find out what has happened to her, they might even decide to kill Ada and Father. Father says their only choice is to bury Lorraine permanently. Father then says that, even if the Ground ever releases Samson, Samson will likely be so changed that he will not even recognize Ada. That night, Father and Ada dig a hole and bury Lorraine in the Ground. Later, Ada thinks about how Lorraine was elderly, and would likely have only lived a few more years anyway; Ada feels more pained than comforted by this thought. In the following days, none...
