Summary

In Chapter 13, Malu asks for permission to go to Calaca to do homework, though she does not really intend to do homework while she's there. She just wants to avoid a day filled “with boring cultural events” (101). Joe is working at the counter and he is surprised that Malu knows who he is. Ana tells Malu they chose Mexican and Mexican American bands and singers to be displayed on the wall of the cafe. They included the Smiths, a band from England, because that group is popular in Mexico. Malu is surprised when Ana says there have been “Mexicans in punk for as long as its been around” (105). Malu says she had “always felt like I was the only brown punk in the whole world” (105).

Chapter 14 opens on Sunday morning. Magaly makes breakfast, including a soy chorizo. Malu asks her mother for help...
