Chapters 8 and 9 Summary

Pavel has accompanied Nikolai to the bailiff's office this morning only to find the same story; there is not enough money to properly run the farm. Normally Pavel contributes money to Nikolai on such occasions but has none to give today and prefers to leave. Pavel wonders to himself why it is that Nikolai is unable to manage the farm operations properly but has no viable suggestions, as Pavel himself is not trained in these matters.

Upon returning to the farm, Pavel knocks on Fenitchka's door to request some green tea when the shopping is conducted in town. Fenitchka is awkward in Pavel's presence because of his haughty nature and the fact that he has rarely spoken to Fenitchka. Now to have Pavel in her own room is embarrassing. Pavel asks to see Fenitchka's baby and waits as the girl retreats...
