Chapters 5 through 8 Summary

Before it's current incarnation, Florian's was an all-white club. In Chapter 5, Philip Marlowe visits the former owner's widow, Jessie Florian, to find out what, if anything, she might know about Moose Malloy's girl Velma. He lies and tells Jessie that he's been hired by Velma's folks to find her. The detective shares a pint of bourbon with Jessie Florian only to find that the woman is a mean drunk. Jessie does, however, give Marlowe an envelope full of pictures of people who had worked at her husband's establishment at one time or another. Although she attempts to hide it from him, Marlowe finds a photograph of someone he thinks is Velma Velma Valento poorly hidden in Jessie's trunk. Jessie Florian tells Marlowe that Velma is dead. He takes the pictures back to Nulty, the cop at the 77th Street Division.
