Summary

In the prologue, two sisters play in the yard before their mother wakes up. The younger sister finds a spider web which fascinates her.

In Part 1, Chapter 1, "Miranda," Miranda is surprised her younger sister, Lucia, wants to marry, Yonah, an older Russian Jew. When her mother meets him, she disapproves, skeptical of his divorce. After their mother dies, the sisters sort through her belongings.

Lucia and Yonah marry in the courthouse. The new couple moves into Yonah's apartment, attached to his health food store. Miranda notes how changed Lucia seems around Yonah.

That summer, Yonah, Lucia, Miranda, and Miranda's friend Tess vacation on Cape Cod. Miranda feels frustrated Yonah thinks he knows Lucia.

That fall, Yonah calls Miranda, worried. Lucia is not sleeping and is paranoid. Miranda knows she needs medical attention and rushes to New York. Lucia’s last episode was...
