Summary

Chapter 4 is titled “Breaking Pact,” and it is set in November of 1980. At school, a teacher named Mr. Brown told Regina she was failing his class and urged her to explain where her bruised came from. She declined. That afternoon, a social worker named Ms. Davis was in the house. Regina wanted to trust the woman to help, but other officials had let her down over the years and she was afraid. Ms. Davis pointed out that Regina would soon be 14, the legal age of emancipation. She assured Regina that Rose and Norm would be taken away from Cookie, too.
