Point of View

This novel is told from the first-person point of view by Edgar. He seems to be telling his story directly to his reader considering the way he introduces himself in the first chapter: “My name is Edgar Freemantle. I used to be a big deal in the building and contracting business” (3). Edgar also narrates in the first-person his “How to Draw a Picture” series. Consider the opening sentence: “Start with a blank surface. It doesn’t have to be paper or canvas, but I feel it should be white” (2). While Edgar is narrating these sections, he uses them exclusively to describe Elizabeth’s experiences with drawing. These sections seem to be the compilation of what Edgar learned from his psychic evaluation of the artwork Elizabeth did as a child.
