Summary

A week passes after Ana gives the ring to Marisela, and Marisela does not reappear. One day, Ana decides to cook a meal for an old woman named Rose who lives in the same building, and the old woman is grateful. Another week passes, and Marisela does not reappear. Ana secretly pays the rest of Marisela’s debt out of Ana’s own secret savings. On Sunday, Rose invites Ana to go to church with her, and Ana accepts. Meanwhile, the political situation continues to shift in the Dominican Republic. In April 1965, Dominicans overthrow the American-backed provisional government and establish their own government. Ana fears that America will respond by sending their military to the Dominican Republic. One day, Juan says that he will have to temporarily return to the Dominican Republic to manage some business affairs that are threatened by these political changes...
