Camberwell, Melbourne is the neighborhood in Australia where Amal lives with her parents. It is a suburban area, and Amal notes that her Muslim family stands out in a way they did not in their previous neighborhood. The houses are nice, but Amal does not know most of the neighbors. This could mean that little effort has been made by either Amal's family or the neighbors to be friendly.
