Summary

In Chapter 5, Vesta locks Charlie in the cabin and drives to the library. She does not want to be stopped by Ghod again, but does not mind the idea of "coming to Magda's same violent conclusion" (158). Ghod must have killed Magda, because Blake would have been too young and weak to accomplish it. At least Magda's spirit was now free to go where she pleased. Vesta feels excited by the story, as if she is proving Walter wrong. The story is freeing her too.

At the library, the computers are all occupied by teenagers, glazed over staring at the screens. Blake could be one of them if he were that sort of teen; but he is different. While waiting for a computer, Vesta wanders into the books. A homeless-looking woman mutters to herself in the aisle. When she leaves, Vesta investigates the book she...
