Summary

In Chapter 8, Lola “dropped by the Golconda” (161). She realized Clive “was the cult” (162, Crosley’s italics). She met with Clive and Vadis, noticing how everyone revered Clive. Vadis and another employee named Jin connected Lola to a polygraph machine and asked her questions that felt irrelevant to their experiment. Vadis said they were mapping her Memory Pathways (168). Throughout the test, Lola talked about her relationships, her fears of being unlovable and incapable “of loving someone in return” (171). Vadis thought Lola’s regard for love was defeatist, but believed that after more encounters and more sessions, she would be “cured of indecision” and granted closure (174).

In Chapter 9, Lola dressed up “before leaving the house” or “before leaving for work” (175). After work she wandered “the streets of Chinatown” (175). She only called Boots if she had a normal day. One night, she ran into two exes...
