Asta's Son/Crispin

Crispin is a thirteen-year-old boy from the village of Stromford. He is extremely poor, and now that his mother is dead he wonders how he will survive on his own. He is known simply as "Asta's son" until the priest, Father Quinel, tells him his real name. He is forced to flee from his village when the steward declares him a "wolf's head", which means that anyone can kill him as if he is a wild animal. He does not know why the steward wants him dead, and knows very little about his own family. He has no idea who his father was. Father Quinel hints that there is something important about his father and mother that he needs to find out.
