Edmond Dantes is able to escape the sack after being thrown into the ocean. He swims to the Isle of Tiboulen, where a ship has been wrecked during the overnight storm. A smuggler's boat comes along, and Dantes pretends to be a member of the wrecked ship's crew. Dantes convinces them he is honorable and they agree to take him to the next port.
