Summary

“October. Evening. Ani’s Apartment” (43). Ani and Eddie argue over whether he should become Ani’s primary caregiver and support. At first, Ani refuses completely, but Eddie keeps insisting that he would be a good choice.

Ani suggests that Eddie is trying to do penance for what happened to her, that he is trying to make himself feel less guilty. Eddie reminds her that what happened to her was an accident, and that he does not feel any guilt.

Ani suggests that he is not reliable: Eddie insists that he is, reminding her that he is 12 years sober and was faithful to her for almost 21 years. This part of the conversation contains references to how Eddie became involved with his current girlfriend when he and Ani were separated, before the accident.
