Summary

Chapter 13 opens in 2008 in the aftermath of the mahrajan shooting. The Khourys are staying at Rita’s parents’ house together and Rita is sleeping in her childhood bedroom again. She has persistent nightmares about the shooting. Murphy delves into backstory in the beginning of the chapter, narrating how one person who was attending the festival recorded the shooting on his cell phone. The police later released the video to the public. The video shows Brian David or B.D. Zajac, 24, shooting Rita’s sister, Allison, and Rita's boyfriend, Jonah. Rita threw herself on her niece and nephew in the midst of the shooting. Bobby body slammed B.D. to the ground and got the gun away from him.
