Summary

In Chapter 25, Hélène participates in the firing squad, killing those of Gaspard’s men who are guilty of rape and kidnapping. They kill Marceline as well. Hélène finally tells Denis that Alex is dead. She vows to kill his murderer, Obersturmführer Wolff. Louis warns them that three hundred Germans are approaching. The Maquis retreat.

One week later, the Germans surround the Maquis. Louis gets shot. Hélène removes the bullet from his arm with a knife. She and Hubert meet with Tardivat for reinforcements. Denis takes Louis to a hospital. When they reunite, Denis informs her that the Allies are now in Cannes.
